Burners… millions of us accumulated over 35 years of cultivating… a network web spanning 30 countries in participation, expansion spreading through associations, carried through those who never even touched playa yet still ready and inspired to carry the torch. But where do we go from here within the massive resource of this movement?

Are we more than just a city and the culture thereof? What is this destination our cultural movement is traveling to arrive at? And how can we set our bearings and realign our paths when we cannot yet see where we are going?
Perhaps we just need the vision of destination before we sow the fruits of arrival. Perhaps a vision of something, something saturated with love in culture and beauty in creativity everywhere we see. Perhaps not just a dusty plane in the desert or pockets of culture in society, but a vast saturated expanse spanning around the world that spreads through with fires of inspiration and waters of compassion…something they can step just outside their doors to see. It sounds much like a Modern Renaissance to me. But how will we ever get from here to there?

Truth is we are in a world on fire literally and figuratively… We are in a world of conquest wars set on genocide, in a world where the game of Monopoly is a winner take all, in a world where pain has been made profitable and we are all its target market. Within this world of scorched fire, the price is the health of our friends, the well being of our families, and the lives of the precious children. The world is on fire and the man will burn.

While we love our culture, snark and sculpture alone won’t save us. Simply gathering in the desert and celebrating art to become better people won’t save us. Simply cultivating culture in the default world alone won’t save us. These are just some ingredients to a much larger recipe and only when all ingredients are accounted for will these things help save us.

So then, once again, what is the destination if not to change the scorched reality we live in? What is the unifying vision that recalls back our scattered sights to refocus our Burner energies into building momentum toward a brighter future? Can you speak it in a vision sentence that glides off the tongue and spreads like fire from ear to ear in a way they can hear?

While there is an irony within the phrase, “Take Burning Man seriously”, the truth is that it is a movement toward a larger destination and while the man burns, the world burns with it. The scripted play is much greater than the play of playa; it is the story of our evolution into a new world. Let transformation ring true, for the story of our play will be retold for many generations to come. Let’s write the script we want retold. This is the story of how the change came to be.

We are many millions strong and there will be fire with or without us: There will be firing in the job markets, firing upon civilians, firing off hate in the pride of fear, firing up the furnaces that turns the victims of greed and cash into dusty ash.
There will always be fires burning, but the fires of passion and creation are the ones we need to see. If we do not fill the voids between strangers with the truth of our being, they will fill it in for us with the lies of deception. The empty spaces between strangers and friends will be filled regardless of who does it. This is the nature of the void. The urgency to fill it will define the human race, so it is a race to place something real within the empty space.
So we either accept the fires given or build the ones we want to see. We either accept the world we’re handed or build the new reality. Only two paths remain, the worst case scenario or the best case ideal. Only one will remain in the end. Which vision do you feed your energy toward?

So perhaps it is time the mainstream stops seeing us as a “festival” and sees with their clear revelation that it is “a movement for humanity”. But we have to earn that perception and we have yet to do so. So let the vision spread along the tongues a fire that ignites hope and inspiration within the lives of the suffering and the lost. Through the tears of the weeping children for the pain we have inflicted upon them, let them see upon their salted seas the bright of light we have brought for them within a world of darkness. Let this be our gift.

There are millions of us, perhaps tens or even hundreds of millions and we are the cultivators of the New Renaissance, the creators of the new reality that will give all the option to walk away from the bitter old into the sweetness of new. That is what the mainstream needs to see, not the festival it claims us to be. We have everything we need to change the world and it only takes believing it’s possible.

For we are the living ancestors writing a living story that our future descendants are currently looking back upon at this
