Dean Barlese is a spiritual leader for the Paiute community of Northern Nevada. He holds many religious ceremonies and community gatherings for the Pyramid Lake and wider area at his property. Currently he uses the living room of his house to host such gatherings , which is a small and inefficient space, as one can see in the photos below. The Native Solidarity Project in collaboration with the Temple Guardians, hopes to build a proper ceremony house for Dean and the Paiute community, to serve as the spiritual and communal gathering space for the Pyramid Lake and wider area.
Dean holds religious ceremonies every Sunday which include but are not limited to singing, dancing, and drumming. Based off of initial conversations these are the specifications from Dean that he would wish the space to have:
One open space that must be conducive to both religious gatherings and social gatherings
A circular area for drumming for example
A place to socialize after sweats and have dinner
A restroom with a shower would be ideal
It will need a kitchen with a sink and running water for meal prepping/cooking, and cleaning
Should be able to accommodate at least 30 people with upwards of 50 people
Needs a walkway for his wheelchair from his home to the ceremony house
People mostly gather in a circle in chairs or stools (see below picture for reference)
